One Green Planet readers know that rhino poaching is getting worse due to the high values their horns fetch on the black market, leaving the species in grave danger. Last year alone, 1,000 African rhinos fell victim to the illegal trade. Their horns are ground up for use in traditional Asian medicines that we know are useless, but this doesn’t stop poachers from exploiting customers’ willingness to pay top dollar for rhino horn “miracle cures.”
In an attempt to save South Africa’s remaining white rhinos, conservationists are airlifting them to safety via helicopter. You can imagine how easy this is. Watch the video to see how the experts do it!
This footage was shot by professional photographer Emma Gatland, who followed Conservation group Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife as they completed this mission last April. This trip probably isn’t the rhino’s finest moment, but he’ll enjoy a life of peace and freedom after landing in his new home.
