A month ago, Starbucks announced their new sustainability initiative. The environmental coffee-lover will tell you the biggest problem with Starbucks is the insane amount of cups and straws that they use every single day. Their initiative included a shift away from single-use plastic to reusable packaging. But another environmental change they announced they’d be making is the addition of plant-based options. And it looks like they weren’t kidding, because we already know one product they’ll be launching this year.

It’s becoming more and more clear that as part of our fight to save the planet, we need more people to transition to a plant-based diet. A United Nations-backed report a few months ago urged people to eat plant-based to fight Climate change. Animal agriculture is the third leading cause of Climate change, so Starbucks was right to include plant-based offerings as part of their sustainability changes.

It was recently revealed that they’d be launching a plant-based breakfast sandwich this year in the United States and Canada! There weren’t too many details, but we knew it would have a plant-based patty. We now know that the breakfast sandwich launching in Canada on March 3rd, will have a plant-based patty made by Beyond Meat.

Starbucks announced that they worked with Beyond Meat to “come up with a patty flavored with rosemary, fennel and other herbs and spices.” The sandwich does have egg and cheddar in it, so it’s not vegan but slowly reducing meat intake can still have an impact.
