Were the world ours for a day, we’d institute a flurry of changes — both major and minute — to try and make sure that our planet (and all the creatures on it) were nourished, sustained, and cared for. In other words, one of our first orders of business would be divinely creating an abundance of plant-based resources, and inserting them in choice areas across the globe.
Food deserts would suddenly have access to fresh, affordable produce; dairy-free alternatives would be available in the cheese and milk aisle as far as the eye could see; people would have access to all the ingredients they desire and would want to cook meals that nourished both their souls and their bodies.
It seems our dreams are a step closer to becoming reality because new research by 1010 Data suggests that 2018 is going to be the biggest year for plant-based eating yet. Not only are consumers more conscious than ever about what they’re putting in their bodies — and demanding transparency from food and beverage companies, which is great! — but they’re collectively savvier about how their food choices impact the environment.
Per Collective Revolution, searches for the word “plant-based” tripled from 2016 to 2017 during March — July, and consumers have taken to the internet to buy 2.7 times more plant-based products online than they did in January 2016. 1010 Data hypothesizes that some of the March-time growth can be attributed to the release of the popular 2017 documentary, What the Health.
