Fast food chains should know by now that if they decide to test a plant-based option, customers will likely come running because plant-based options are what the people want! Burger King tested a meatless whopper with a plant-based meat alternative by Impossible Foods and very quickly expanded it to all locations after noting its success. Dunkin’ also recently decided to test a plant-based breakfast sausage by Beyond Meat and that was also so successful that they accelerated the expansion from January to November. Pizza Hut is now embarking on a plant-based test themselves!
Pizza Hut will be testing a veggie pizza called the Garden Specialty Pizza, which includes onions, mushrooms, banana peppers, and even more excitedly, the new plant-based meat alternative by Kelloggs’ Morningstar Farms called Incogmeato. The pizza will feature meatless Incogmeato sausages, rivaling the Impossible sausages on Little Caesar’s menu.
The pizza isn’t just an attempt at offering more plant-based options to consumers, but it’s also a shift toward sustainability. The chain will also be testing an eco-friendly round box that the pizza will be sold in. Yes, you read that right — round! Pizza boxes are usually square, but this isn’t your average pizza box. It’s totally compostable and it snaps shut to keep the pizzas warm.
So far, the pizza and box are only being tested in Pheonix, Arizona, but if other plant-based test runs are any indication, this might just be available nationwide soon.
