Motif FoodWorks is officially releasing its signature plant-based protein called HEMAMI after receiving the Generally Recognised as Safe (GRAS) status from the US FDA. The plant-based protein is designed to add meaty flavors and smells to plant-based meat products, making it easier to create realistic vegan products.
HEMAMI is a yeast-based heme protein that is made to taste and smell identical to bovine alternatives. It is not its own plant-based product, but rather an ingredient to be used in other products to make them more appealing to consumers. HEMAMI can make any meat substitute taste and smell realistic whether it be beef, chicken, or another kind of meat.
Earlier this year, Motif secured $226 million in funding, which has helped them to expand their operation and prepare for large-scale distribution. Now, with this new status being rewarded to Motif FoodWorks, they are beginning larger scale distribution in preparation of sales.
Jonathan McIntyre, CEO of Motif FoodWorks, said, “Plant-based foods have the potential to drive a more sustainable future, but that doesn’t matter unless people actually eat them. HEMAMI enables a whole new taste and experience level for meat alternatives that a wider group of plant-based and flexitarian consumers will crave.”
With the demand for vegan options growing, it is more important than ever to create more realistic and better-tasting alternatives. HEMAMI will hopefully help companies do just that!
