McDonald’s announced its vegan meal will be coming to the United Kingdom January 2. Called “Veggie Dippers,” it includes vegan nuggets alongside fries and a drink.

McDonald’s follows KFC’s lead in the UK and Burger King’s in Europe with its vegan meal offering. Domino’s will release a vegan pizza into the UK in the new year. The dippers are made of rice, red pepper, tomato, and split peas. Perhaps to avoid the same fate as the United States’ Burger King, McDonald’s will fry the dippers separately from meat produce.

Animal rights organizations applauded the move. Humane Society director Claire Bass told the BBC, “When big global brands like McDonalds start serving up vegan food, it can have a huge meat-reduction impact overal.” PETA director Elisa Allen chimed in, calling it, “the very definition of a happy meal.”

A spokesperson for McDonald’s said, “In the last 12 months we’ve seen an 80% uplift in customers ordering vegetarian options at McDonald’s, so it is time for the brand famous for the dippable McNugget to launch a dippable option for our vegetarian, vegan and flexitarian customers. The Veggie Dippers are a delicious addition to our menu and we’re looking forward to seeing what customers make of our first vegan Extra Value Meal and Happy Meal in the New Year.”

Fast food chains continue their foray into plant-based and vegan meals to meet demand. Let’s hope this is just the beginning of an increase for 2020. Read more about plant-based options at places like Red Robin and Dunkin Donuts.
