Ikea, a popular furniture store which just so happens to sell food items like hot dogs, is finally delivering a vegan alternative. Ikea opened their popular, hot dog cart over 37 years ago, and last month they decided to debut a veggie hot dog at their U.K. locations. The launch of this vegan dog was so successful, selling over 1 million hot dogs to date, that they decided to bring it over to the United States. Next time you are shopping at Ikea for ready to assemble furniture, you can now purchase a vegan dog from their hot dog cart!

Their new veggie dog is made with wholesome ingredients like kale, carrots, ginger, and red lentils, and omits seven times less carbon dioxide emissions than its meat counterpart. Michael La Cour, director at IKEA Food Services, explains that, “We are facing many challenges in the food production industry today and one of those challenges is that we need to be more sustainable. We the global reach that we have at Ikea we believe that we have a responsibility and a great opportunity to serve food that is good for the planet.”

Not only is Ikea reducing its carbon footprint by debuting a more sustainable hot dog, but they are also implementing a food waste solution to reduce waste by 50%. In the year 2017 alone, over 200,000 kilograms of food was saved through their waste solution program, or 865 tons of carbon emissions.

It’s amazing to see a company putting forth sustainable solutions in an effort to reduce their impact on our environment!
