Though most children (and adults, too!) may scoff at the idea of eating Brussels sprouts, we, as Green Monsters, know that these vegetables are incredibly healthy and even tasty when prepared correctly.
Brussels sprouts are very high in vitamin C and folic acid. They also contain glucosinolates, which contain powerful detoxifying compounds that may help prevent cancer. A good way to get a dose of this uber-healthy ingredient is to roast them in the oven with a delicious glaze or sauce. Follow these easy steps to make perfectly roasted Brussels sprouts every time:
1. Heat oven to 400 degrees
No matter what you decide to put on top of those Brussels sprouts, you’ll want to heat your oven to 400 degrees and get a baking sheet ready.
2. Pick your dressing and spices
The fun of roasting any veggie is experimenting with all sorts of spices, dressings, sauces, and glazes to put on top. With so much variety, you could make roasted Brussels sprouts each day of the week, with each batch tasting completely different than the last. Try a mix of olive oil, lime juice and chili pepper, sherry maple vinagrette, pomegranate balsamic, or maple-mustard glaze.
3. Mix ingredients in a bowl
Mix all of your ingredients like the oil and spices in a bowl, then add in the Brussels sprouts so that you coat them with the glaze or sauce. Before you mix the Brussels sprouts, you might want to heat some of the ingredients in a skillet first to better marry the flavors, such as garlic, shallots, and olive oil.
4. Roast away
Transfer those greased-up Brussels sprouts to a cookie sheet and bake in the oven at 400 degrees for 40 minutes.
5. Serve and enjoy!
You can serve the end product as a steaming side dish or let them sit – they’re tasty at room temperature and even cold.
