The Great British Bake Off has come under fire after making their vegan contestant use animal products during a technical challenge. The challenge required the bakers to create a malt loaf that included butter and eggs.

Freya Cox is the first vegan baker to star on the popular baking show and has since apologized to her fans for having to go against her beliefs to use animal products in her baking.

Cox apologized on her Instagram, saying, “I wanted to add a small disclaimer before the episode. I was desperate to show the world vegan baking is just as exciting, with the hope to inspire people to give it a go. For obvious reasons, I wasn’t able to change the technical challenge as it would mean the whole show was unfair. Sorry if this is disappointing to hear, but once the show has finished, I have plans to veganise the recipes for you all, so I hope this makes up for that.”

Since then, the Great British Bake Off has been criticized by fans who believed that the rules could have been tweaked to allow the vegan contestant to bake with vegan ingredients.

This incident also shows how difficult it will be in the future for vegan contestants, as they too may be forced to bake non-vegan desserts.

Hopefully, this popular baking show will get with the picture and be more open to respecting the lifestyles and beliefs of their contestants!
