On October 16th, people from all around the globe come together to help fight hunger and make a commitment to eradicate hunger in our lifetime. World Food Day was established in 1979 and is observed in almost every country on the planet! The date marks the creation of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in Canada in 1945.
Every year, people come together to raise awareness and engage others in the movement to end hunger. There are grassroots events, hunger walks, World Food Day dinners, and food drives. Be a part of the solution in your community and around the world. World Food Day is a global movement to end hunger because no one should have to go hungry.
Just as people from all over the world come together as one force to fight hunger, we are bringing together delicious dishes from around the globe. Last year, we gave you 10 incredible fusion dishes and this year, we will travel the globe with 20 amazing recipes from nations all around the world. Happy World Food Day!
1. Chickpea and Eggplant Moussaka
Moussaka is a traditional Greek dish that is either eggplant or potato based. It is always multilayered, often with meat and cheese. In this Chickpea and Eggplant Moussaka, it begins with an eggplant base, is drenched in tomato-y flavor, and is well seasoned, especially after baking in the oven. Incorporating chickpeas and featuring a yummy variety of vegetables, this moussaka will hit the spot in both nutrition and taste.
2. Turos Csusza: Hungarian Mac and Cheese
Turos Csusza, a traditional Hungarian recipe, basically translates to “cheese pasta.” The original recipe consists of pasta made with a sauce of quark cheese, sour cream, and bacon. This version substitutes the quark cheese with mashed tofu and vegan cream cheese, vegan sour cream, and any kind of vegan bacon, like tempeh or tofu bacon. It’s super easy to throw together and best served with salt and plenty of black pepper.

These Ethiopian Sweet Potato Burgers are something special. They’re made from deliciously spiced patties with the addition of an aioli inspired by nitter kibbeh, also known as Ethiopian butter. 5. Schnitzel Burger

Roti Jala are visually quite striking; the beautiful golden color from turmeric. As it comes out of the stove, it’s quite crisp, but over time, gets soft, almost like a piece of rolled silk. They’re made from sweet potato, which is possibly the best combination ever. Serve these crispy falafel in a pita with all your favorite vegetables.
8. Italian Meatballs With Cauliflower Mash
This delicious recipe for Italian Meatballs With Cauliflower Mash combines herby and flavorsome “meatballs” with a rich and luxurious Italian tomato sauce and deliciously creamy cauliflower mash. They’re incredibly easy to make — just be sure to soak the almonds ahead of time — and can be served hot or cold with whatever sides you like.

12. Shyoyo Ramen
Have you ever had a fantastic bowl of ramen? When it comes to this awesome bowl of noodles, there are three kinds: shio ramen which is seasoned with salt, miso ramen which is seasoned with miso, and shyoyo ramen, which is seasoned with tamari, shoyu, or soy sauce. This Shyoyo Ramen with tofu and veggie sausages is a must-make for any ramen fan.
13. Mexican Chorizo
Your taco nights just got ten times better. Traditional Mexican chorizo is typically made with pork meat and is usually super greasy, but this vegan version is meatless and much healthier! Made with tofu and mushrooms, this Mexican Chorizo is seasoned similarly to the original – plenty of chilis, garlic, paprika, cumin, and other spices – which all get absorbed within the mushrooms and tofu so it’s not dripping grease. Use this delicious “beef crumble” mix in your tacos, burritos, or on top of a bed of greens for a taco salad!
14. Ongol Ongol Singkong: Indonesian Steamed Cassava Cake
Ongol Ongol Singkong is a naturally gluten-free Indonesian dessert made from cassava, also known as yuca. Grated cassava is combined with sugar, coconut milk, and agar agar, then steamed until it’s light and fluffy and topped with coconut sprinkles. Some people like to steam the cake batter three portions, then add food coloring to each portion, typically red, green, and yellow. These colorful cakes are known as kue lapis singkong.
15. Spanish Omelet With Sun-Dried Tomatoes and Wakame
Spanish omelet is the English name for a Spanish dish called tortillas de patatas, made by whisking eggs together and then frying them with potatoes and vegetables. Though we call it an “omelet,” in Spain this is intended as an appetizer or dinner entrée — though it would make a fantastic weekend breakfast. This Spanish Omelet uses chickpea flour instead of eggs and adds sun-dried tomatoes and wakame seaweed for delicious umami flavor. Serve as is or with a drizzle of hot sauce.
16. Simple Chinese Braised Tofu
There’s nothing like a simple dish that you can whip up using ingredients that are likely already in your pantry. In this Simple Chinese Braised Tofu, firm tofu is marinated in soy sauce, oil, garlic, sugar, and peppers and then pan-friend until golden brown. The braised tofu can then be served a number of ways: on a bed of rice and veggies, on top of a citrusy-ginger salad, or in a wrap with Asian touches like bamboo shoots and soy sauce.
17. Jamaican Tofu Scramble
Celebrate Caribbean food with this delicious Jamaican Tofu Scramble. This fusion dish uses traditional Caribbean foods like ackee (a mild tasting fruit that pairs well with savory dishes) and callaloo (similar to spinach) along with the typical tofu scramble seasonings like turmeric, garlic, and coriander. The result is a unique and supremely flavorful entrée that can be enjoyed for breakfast or brunch!
18. Pancit Palabok: Filipino Rice Noodles and Vegetables
Pancit palabok is a Filipino dish that’s great for potlucks, parties, and gatherings. The traditional version contains rice noodles that are served with seafood and blanketed in a fishy sauce. This version of Filipino Rice Noodles and Vegetables replaces seafood with tofu and vegetables and the rice noodles are blanketed in a creamy, savory sauce.
19. Akara: Nigerian Fried Bean Balls
Akara are Nigerian Fried Bean Balls, popular in West African countries and Brazil. Black-eyed peas are the most common choice of bean for this crispy snack, but other beans, each with their own flavor or texture, can be experimented with until you find your favorite. Akara can be enjoyed as a snack or appetizer with a side of savory sauce for dipping and they’re best served while still fresh and crispy.
20. Kesra: Algerian Flatbread
Kesra is round, semolina-based Algerian Flatbread that’s native to Eastern part of the country. To make traditional kesra, the Algerians use a cast iron pan or a Dutch oven with embossed circle lines at the bottom. Kesra is an essential accompaniment to soups, bell pepper salads, but it’s also great when enjoyed with a glass of non-dairy milk. Kesra can be eaten hot or cold, as an accompaniment to both savory and sweet dishes.
