Agricultural ministers in France and Austria are calling for a European plant-based protein strategy to cultivate more sustainable food in the future.

Their arguments are rooted in the beneficial nature of planting more plant-based protein crop sources, as many types of legumes, for example, bring nutrition back to the soil rather than depleting the soil’s nutrition. It would also provide better food security and less deforestation as less food would need to be imported into Europe.

Focusing on plant-based proteins would encourage people to depend more on plant-based protein rather than supporting animal agriculture. This would be a huge deal since animal agriculture is responsible for creating a huge portion of the world’s greenhouse gases. Thus, adopting a plant-based strategy could help Europe take steps towards its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, as well as becoming more sustainable and having a smaller impact on the climate.
