Eleven Madison Park has come under fire for allegedly having a secret room where rich diners can order meat.
The restaurant recently revamped its menu to feature all vegan food, excluding option dairy milk and honey for tea. Eleven Madison saw wonderful feedback after the change, gaining attention from many vegans and vegetarians who were ecstatic to hear about the new menu. They even had a 15,000 person long waitlist.
The restaurant was recently raked over the coals by food critic Pete Wells. He commented on the beef dish, “It’s some kind of metaphor for Manhattan, where there’s always a higher level of luxury, a secret room where the rich eat roasted tenderloin while everybody else gets an eggplant canoe.”
Many vegans took issue with this comment. They were upset not only about the meat option, but also the fact that the review implied that the meat was somehow superior to the plant-based foods.
In a recent Grub Street article, the author explained that the “secret meat room” is not just another room for regular diners. It instead refers to two rooms set aside for private events. They share a separate kitchen and people can request a number of animal dishes for those types of events.
In the review, Wells states that the meat option is available “until the year ends,” so hopefully, the restaurant will phase out the meat and hold true to their initial statement of having a completely plant-based menu in all parts of the restaurant.
