20 Classic Sauces and Dressings You Can Make With Plant-Based Ingredients

Are you looking for some ways to spice up your salad? Or some interesting sauces to add flavor to your favorite dish? Look no further, because here are 20 classic dressings and sauces made completely plant-based.

You’ll be amazed once you’ve tried plant-based nacho cheese, ranch, honey dijon and more. Bring your salads to life or set out a delicious sauce for your next family gathering with these surprising recipes!

We went through the Food Monster App to find 20 iconic sauces to make totally plant-based.

Sauces:

1. Simple Béchamel Sauce

One of the French “mother sauces,” now you can make your own vegan Simple Béchamel Sauce with this recipe by Rene Barker. This buttery, creamy sauce adds flavor to any pasta dish.

2. Beefless Bolognese Sauce

This vegan Beefless Bolognese Sauce recipe by Julie Zimmer reimagines the classic sauce to use soya and steak spice with garlic and tomato puree. This ‘meaty’ sauce still manages to stay light.

3. 3-Ingredient Whisk-Only Caramel Sauce

The Veginner Cookbook’s 3-Ingredient Whisk-Only Caramel Sauce is the perfect topping for sundaes and homemade confections. All it takes is water, almond butter, and maple, rice, or agave syrup, so it couldn’t be simpler!

4. Cashew Mozzarella Cheese Sauce


Talida Voinea has shared a lovely gluten-free Cashew Mozzarella Cheese Sauce perfect for adding to pizza, calzones, and lasagna. The cashew-based sauce will brown slightly when baked, creating a yummy crust!

5. Spicy Cheese Sauce

Here’s another cheese sauce perfect for dipping. Kibby Miller’s Spicy Cheese Sauce is also great for wraps and pasta.

6. Green Chili Nacho Sauce

Sara Hohn’s Green Chili Nacho Sauce will add flavor to chips, veggies, and even mac and cheese. She also suggests trying it with burritos, burgers and pizza.

7. Homemade Worcestershire Sauce

Bryanna Clark’s vegan Homemade Worcestershire Sauce will add a tangy flavor to any dish it’s added to. You can even use it to make your own vegan-friendly Bloody Mary!

8. Tzatziki

Sarah and Rocco Pirri’s Tzatziki recipe gives a plant-based take on this Greek classic. Try it on your next falafel or gyro!

9. Spicy Honey Mustard

The ‘honey’ in this Spicy Honey Mustard by Jennifer Harmon is actually brown rice syrup! It also incorporates cayenne pepper and chili powder for a spicy kick.

10. Vegan ‘Fish’ Sauce

Veronica Grace’s guide on How to Make Vegan ‘Fish’ Sauce will show you how to make your own plant-based fish sauce for Vietnamese and Thai cooking. She also recommends using it season Thai papaya salad.

11. Sambal Kecang: Peanut Satay Sauce

Try this Sambal Kerang: Peanut Satay Sauce by Alenoosh Matakupan for your next Indonesian dish. This sauce has a creamy, slightly spicy taste with peanuts, garlic and brown sugar.

12. Coconut Ginger Chutney

Preeti Tamilarasan’s Coconut Ginger Chutney adds a spicy note to a number of dishes. It uses ginger instead of garlic for a unique flavor!

13. Smoked Cashew Cheese Spread

This Smoked Cashew Cheese Spread recipe from Juli Van den Kerchove will add smoky flavors to bread, pizza, or just as a delicious snack. Try it with pasta and veggies too!

14. Harissa

Rinku Bhattacharya’s Harissa recipe has a bold, spicy flavor with red chilis. This Tunisian spice sauce can be made more or less spicy depending on how much cayenne pepper you want to put in.

Dressings:

1. Copycat Ranch: Creamy Cucumber Herb Dressing

This creamy, cooling Copycat Ranch: Creamy Cucumber Herb Dressing by Lindsay Clarke uses cashews for a delightful complement to any salad or wrap. Try pairing it with pizza or spicy foods too!

2. Creamy Lemon Herb Dressing

This Creamy Lemon Herb Dressing by Julie West gets its creamy taste from hemp hearts. Try it on a salad or as a dip for fresh veggies!

3. Raw Gado Gado Dressing

Kelly Fielding’s Raw Gado Gado Dressing is perfect for veggies, tempeh, and tofu. This Balinese sauce has garlic and peanut butter for a rich flavor.

4. Blue Cheez Dressing

This Blue Cheez Dressing by Kim Campbell uses tofu and cashews for a rich flavor. It’s a perfect dip, as well as great on a burger or salad.

5. Poppy Seed Ramp Dressing

Amie Valpone’s Poppy Seed Ramp Dressing is a great addition to salads with all the health benefits of flaxseed oil. Nutritional yeast and poppy seeds elevate this ramp dressing.

6. Caesar Dressing

Liven up your next Caesar salad with this delicious Caesar Dressing from Zoe Eisenberg. This dressing uses tahini to achieve its smooth taste, with lemon juice adding some zesty flavor.
