A pub in the quaint village of Willey, Warwickshire is set to make waves in the vegan food scene. The Barn, co-owned by Sarah Goodchild and Ben Stead-Davis, is believed to be the first pub in Britain to serve only plant-based dishes, including the highly anticipated vegan carvery.
The 13-item roast dinner features a choice of Tofurky (tofu turkey), Seitan, nut roast, and plant-based sausages, all with the classic trimmings. Vegan sides include Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes, maple-glazed parsnips, carrots, mash, roast cabbage, creamy leeks, stuffing, and a red wine gravy. The delicious meal is priced at £14.95 ($18.50) and is already proving to be a hit with vegans who are traveling from far and wide to taste the unique offering.
Head chef and co-owner Ben says the restaurant is the only one in the UK, and possibly the world, offering a completely plant-based carvery. He adds, “People worry about getting their protein from a vegan diet, but they forget that beans and tofu contain more protein than steak.”
Sarah and Ben took over The Barn in September and have been gradually introducing more vegan options to the menu. Their vegan roast trial in November was a success, and they launched their vegan carvery in January. The pub’s decision to go entirely meat-free has received a mixed response, but the positive feedback from the vegan community has been overwhelming.
Melanie Kidd-White, 70, from Rugby, visited The Barn for the first time last weekend and had this to say about the experience: “I was really excited as I had never been to a fully vegan carvery. I absolutely loved the Seitan. I’ve had Seitan before, but the one here today was excellent and a nice change from the usual options.”
The Barn’s vegan carvery is fully booked for the next three weeks and is expected to serve more than 130 guests this Sunday. Sarah says, “We are finding our little restaurant is becoming increasingly popular among the vegan community, and we would like to ask for a little more support to help us succeed as the UK’s first fully-vegan carvery.”
It’s clear that there’s a growing demand for plant-based options, and The Barn is leading the way. You may be pleasantly surprised by the delicious flavors and variety of dishes on offer. And who knows, you may just discover a new favorite dish while doing your part for the planet.
If you’re looking to try something new, or want to make a positive impact on the environment, why not head down to The Barn and give their vegan carvery a taste? Your taste buds, and the planet, will thank you.
