Beyond Meat is launching plant-based minced pork in China. Pork is a popular option in China and Beyond Meat hopes the product is used in dumplings, spring rolls, and other Asian dishes. The company recently expanded to 210 KFC locations in China.
The product will first be released in Shanghai and will be used in five local restaurants. “We’re excited to launch Beyond Pork in China, marking a milestone for Beyond Meat,” Candy Chan, the company’s general manager for China, said in a statement. “We are not only launching an entirely new product innovation, but our first plant-based meat product created specifically for the Chinese market.”
While China has been the world’s largest consumer of pork for many years, pork suppliers in the country have been affected by an African swine flu outbreak. Beyond Meat hopes to expand the business to China and provide a variety of products to the market. The company has already brought the Beyond Burger and Beyond Beef to China, according to MarketWatch.
A co-founder of one of the restaurants featuring the plant-based pork said, “I was very impressed the first time I tried Beyond Pork; I even thought the chef must have actually used traditional animal pork mince by mistake. I think our fans are going to be very impressed when they try it — I bet they won’t even be able to tell the difference either.”
