On Wednesday, February 17, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez shared her decision to go vegetarian during the Christian holiday, Lent. She reached out to her Twitter followers for help, asking them to join her, share their vegetarian recipes, and help others.
Ok everyone, I need help!
A few weeks ago I told @RepRaskin that this year I wanted to adopt a vegetarian diet for Lent in memory of his son Tommy.
Jamie said, “Well you’d have to do it the way Tommy would, which means bring people along with you!” ☺️
So, I have 3 requests:

3. If neither of the above apply but you are in a position to give or help others in this time, please consider doing so in the spirit of Tommy. He loved the world so much and dedicated his life to reducing suffering around the world. 💜
Thank you! https://t.co/VbJrcCQ3Ui

AOC’s decision to eat a vegetarian diet is in memory of Representative Jamie Raskin’s son, Tommy. As a passionate vegan, Tommy Raskin convinced his friends and family to go vegetarian, worked as an associate at Mercy for Animals, and wrote about animal rights. The many stories that friends and family have shared about Tommy make it clear that he was an incredibly compassionate individual.

Sadly, Tommy lost his battle with depression on December 31, 2020. Tommy’s family launched the Tommy Raskin Memorial Fund for People and Animals with a contribution of $50,000 in his honor.
Many have already responded to AOC’s tweet, offering recipes and advice. Some have also encouraged her to go vegan and to extend her commitment beyond the forty days of Lent.
