Superfoods are now such a big part of the everyday health conscious because they’re nutritional powerhouse foods. Similar to the concept of taking a daily vitamin in the morning, eating a breakfast full of superfoods is a good way to kick off your day with a burst of vitamins and nutrients. Except, when you’re eating real superfoods, you’re obviously being much healthier than popping a pill and thinking you’re set for the rest of the day. If you eat wholesome foods to start, you’re more likely to continue eating healthy throughout the day as your body processes and understands real food. Try these five superfoods to amp up your breakfast.

1. Maca Powder

Powdered form of superfoods are excellent to quickly throw into baking mixes, juices, or smoothies. Try maca powder in this Banana Almond Butter Superfood Shake. Or, treat yourself with some leftover Raw Vanilla Cake with Chocolate “Buttercream” and Maca that you served after dinner the night before. Don’t worry, a little indulgence isn’t a bad thing, and the ingredients in this recipe hardly scream “dessert.” It’s much healthier than eating any store-bought, refined-sugar-and-dairy-laden sheet cake. In fact, it’s also healthier than sugary cereal, pancakes, or waffles.

2. Goji Berries

There are several types of berries that make it into the coveted superfood category, and no matter which variety you choose, you’ll get a boost of antioxidants that are great for supporting the immune system, maintaining healthy skin, and preventing the harsh physical effects of aging. Goji berries are a complete protein, contain 21 trace minerals, and contain more iron than spinach or vitamin C than an orange. Add goji berry powder to this Raw Vegan Papaya Apple Smoothie.

3. Maqui Berries

Maqui berries have been traditionally used by the Mapuche Indians to treat chronic diseases due to its high antioxidant value, as well as fight fatigue and increase stamina. Use them in this Raw Vegan Superfood Protein Energy Bars recipe or use maqui berry powder in this smoothie recipe.

4. Mulberries

Mulberries are a fabulous source of Vitamin C, iron, calcium, fiber, and protein as well as B vitamins and Vitamin K. Throw these on top of oatmeal, into a smoothie, or bake super berry energy bars. Buy mulberry powder and throw into your morning smoothie.

5. Rooibos Tea

We’re all guilty of either skipping breakfast or choosing a protein bar or snack to eat in the morning as we’re rushing out the door. Mix up your morning routine and plan time to sit down, relax, and start your day with some calm and a cup of tea. Try Rooibos tea, which comes from the Cape in South Africa and has a high concentration of antioxidants and polyphenols. This naturally caffeine-free tea is excellent for boosting glutathione levels. Glutathione promotes efficient liver detoxification making it essential for toxin elimination from the body.
