With the world’s population expected to rise to a staggering 9.8 billion by 2050, those looking to the future are faced with the challenge of feeding such a massive population. Industrialized animal agriculture is not only plagued with unbelievable acts of animal cruelty, but it is also depleting the planet’s resources and is responsible for gross air and water pollution, mass deforestation, and harmful greenhouse gas emissions. Luckily, this problem of sustainably feeding the world’s growing population is being addressed by Netherlands-based food manufacturer Vivera, who has created the world’s first 100 percent plant-based steak!

The new steaks will be sold at Tesco, one of Europe’s largest supermarkets, beginning May 21st of this year. Vivera credits health, animal welfare, and environmental concerns as reasons for creating plant-based foods.

Gert Jan Gombert of Vivera stated, “A large group of vegetarians, vegans, and flexitarians has been very interested in such a product for years. With the breakthrough of its market introduction and large-scale production, a large group of consumers can enjoy this very tasty plant-based product. The smell, taste, and bite can hardly be distinguished from real steak and we are convinced that this product will meet a large need of consumers. It is very important that we eat less meat, both for our own health, animal welfare and for our planet. Innovative and high-quality plant-based products can make a significant contribution here.

As the video from Vivera explains, demand for meat will increase by 50 percent by 2050, and, quite frankly, we do not have the land or resources to sustain our current food system. Thankfully, demand for plant-based products has seen an increase of 140 percent, and nearly half of Americans surveyed said they support a ban on slaughterhouses and would prefer animal-free meat. Thanks to food innovators like Vivera, who has over 40 plant-based meat products and is one of the largest manufacturers in Europe, the demand for healthier alternatives is being met, providing hope for a more sustainable, healthy, and humane future.
