Dr. Oz shares what to do if you ever find yourself choking when you are alone. This technique just might save your life!

Before you do anything, or try any technique, always pick up the phone and call 9-1-1. Even if there is something blocking your airway and you cannot speak on the phone, still call because they can track your location and send immediate help. Once this is done, you can now perform a self-administered abdominal thrust.

First, you will stand behind a chair and place your fist slightly above your navel and below your breast bone. Push down slightly to stabilize your hand, and bend over the chair so that your fist is in line with the edge of the chair. A countertop will also work well if you’re not near a chair. Motion your fist inward and upward as you collapse your body on top of your fist with a good amount of force. This will help dislodge any food that may be stuck in your throat and will open up your airway so you can breathe again. Try practicing this movement at home until you feel confident that you’ve got the hang of it.
