Antle owns the Myrtle Beach Safari in South Carolina, which is a roadside zoo that exploits all kinds of animals for profit. Antle first came into the public eye when he was featured in “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness,” a 2020 Netflix documentary that took the world by storm. In December 2020, Netflix also released a short, three-episode series titled “Tiger King: The Doc Antle Story,” which explored his troubling past and the slew of accusations against him.
Antle’s charges related to money laundering, according to the Associated Press.
The arrest comes after PETA called for a formal investigation into Myrtle Beach Safari and Antle’s nonprofit, Rare Species Fund. PETA claimed that Antle was using charitable donations to fund the zoo but claiming to Support wildlife Conservation.
After Antle’s arrest, Debbie Metzler, Associate Director of Captive Animal Law Enforcement PETA, released a statement, “It’s fitting that “Doc” Antle is behind bars after years of locking up the endangered animals he uses in tawdry photo ops. His legal woes are mounting, as PETA recently blew the whistle on his apparent “charity” scam, and the end to his reign of terrorizing tiger cubs can’t come soon enough.”
Antle is already facing felonies in Virginia for wildlife trafficking and conspiracy to traffic wildlife, as well as 13 misdemeanor counts for violating the Endangered Species Act. He is expected to go on trial next month. We are glad that these overnight celebrities are finally facing the music for the cruel lives that they put these animals through.
