The Taliban released an official religious guideline that bans TV shows and Soap Operas from featuring women actors. The Taliban also called on female journalists to wear hijabs while presenting their reports.

This is the first direct issue from the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice

The Taliban insists that these are not necessarily rules but more like religious guidelines meant to respect the Islamic religion. Airing any show or movie featuring the Prophet Mohammed or other revered figures is also not supposed to be aired out of religious respect.

This is a huge cultural setback for Afghanistan after the Taliban released their new guidelines for entertainment. Though they have insisted that they aren’t rules, everyone knows that they still must be upheld.

Some TV shows and movies may continue to air, but none will involve women actors, suppressing Afghan women even more.

Before the US military took power, Afghanistan had no media to speak of, and all forms of TV or radio were banned. People faced severe punishment if they owned or used a TV.

In the past 20 years, Afghan TV has thrived with the help of Western backing and investments, allowing the Afghan people to enjoy a variety of entertainment. This is just one more thing that the Taliban has uprooted after much hard work to establish it.
