Hope, the cute little goat in the video, is a real trooper. Hope’s mother was a small Pygmy goat and her father was a fairly large alpine goat. The size difference meant that Hope’s mother had to deliver a baby that was much too large for her body. Unfortunately, this lead to some complications. The baby’s umbilical cord snapped during an examination which caused her to open her eyes in the womb. Although the subsequent delivery was a success, Hope was born with pneumonia and permanent blindness.
While this might have spelled an early end for other animals born onto farms, Hope was rescued by the kind people at Soledad Sanctuary in California and given a second chance at life.
Without her sight, Hope had to learn her surroundings by trial and error and that meant bumping into things over, and over. But thanks to her human caretakers, she is now just as confident as any typical goat. She knows her name and a few commands that let her navigate the world around her – for example, the word “clear” lets her know that it’s okay to start frolicking.
It is truly amazing to see how the actions of these kind people have completely transformed the course of Hope’s life. She is able to live happy and healthy surrounded by others who love her and never let’s her lack of sight get in her way. What an inspiration!
