There is one time per year and one time per year only that it is socially acceptable, nay, socially encouraged for us to make it rain sugar treats on every T. Rex, Thor, Groot, and El that shows up at our door with a pillowcase. I mean, one could argue that if a T. Rex shows up at our door demanding candy we should probably give them whatever they want, holiday or not, but for the purposes of this discussion, we’re talking about Halloween.
Which means we gotta pick the perfect thing to hand out … and probably binge on ourselves between trick-or-treaters while we watch a Walking Dead marathon. Something dairy, egg, and gluten-free that won’t weigh us down too much when we wake up in the middle of the night to stare in terror at the jacket we forgot we draped over our desk chair which now looks like a crouching demon. Stupid Walking Dead marathon.
There are lots of choices these days for vegans, what with the growing trend behind moving toward a more cruelty-free lifestyle, but there’s something to be said for choosing a treat that has been vegan from the jump — and that treat is Smarties.
This candy is in the midst of a major renaissance with the addition of their Co-Presidents – sisters Liz Dee and Jessica Dee Sawyer and their cousin Sarah Dee – not to mention new logos, new social media campaigns, and a fresh focus on philanthropy with their DonorsChoose.org partnership that is sending art supplies to classrooms in need. The candy, though, remains the vegan-friendly same in its fun little wrapper (which recently got a trendy new update), which makes it perfectly poppable if you only unwrap one end and slide the little pastel disks of deliciousness out with your teeth. You know you eat them that way, don’t even act like you don’t know what I’m talking about.
I’m Cute-pid. Get it? Okay fine, just give my human some candy, please.
In fact, Smarties have been vegan since its creation nearly 70 years ago and remain proudly vegan today. According to their website Smarties.com, “There are many reasons people choose a vegan or vegetarian diet including for their health, for the environment, and for the animals. We are well aware of the importance of these issues, and we are delighted to offer a compassionate candy to satisfy the vegan sweet tooth!”
The company’s pride in their candy’s animal-free ingredients is something Liz Dee, in particular, takes great pride in as she happens to be the founder of Vegan Ladyboss as well as co-founder and CEO of Baleine & Bjorn Capital LLC, a venture capital fund that invests in businesses creating humane alternatives to animal products.
With this in mind, you can bet that Liz will be throwing a cruelty-free Halloween shin-dig. As she shared with One Green Planet, “Fall is the best. It’s time for pumpkin carving, apple picking and leaf peeping. And of course, candy everywhere. I love this time of year! As a fifth generation candy maker, it is especially gratifying to make a product that brings a smile to people’s faces. I like to celebrate a cruelty-free Halloween by giving out lots of Smarties! I make sure that the people in my life have their Halloween candy needs met. And yes, my candy bowl is full year-round!”
Cruelty-free, creative, AND socially conscious? Load up my jack-o-lantern shaped tub and call me Dracula — I’m in!
But their vegan accolades aren’t the only reason Smarties are good to have on hand this holiday season. As Liz explained, “When people choose their Halloween candy for trick-or-treaters, they don’t know what particular dietary sensitivities or preferences they might encounter. Smarties are the smart choice for Halloween because they are peanut-free, gluten-free and dairy-free, vegan, and free from all top allergens. Smarties are crowd pleasers in more ways than one!”
If you’re celebrating a cruelty-free Halloween, looking for waste-free costumes, or fun ways to celebrate with your pets (if they are cool with that kind of thing), then making sure you’ve got a vegan candy option on hand that also is allergen-free is a great way to kick off the fun! There is nothing we love more than making sure everyone can partake in holiday fun — what are your favorite tips for a cruelty-free Halloween? Tell us in the comments!
