The Scottish Government recently announced that they could ban all disposable plastics, such as plastic bottles and cups, by 2030!

Thanks to Brexit, the UK will not have to follow the European Commission’s forthcoming plan to make all plastic packaging in Europe recyclable or reusable by the end of 2030, Scotland is taking its own steps to confront the plastic issue. According to The National, Environment Secretary Roseanna Cunningham has asked civil servants to look at restricting the sale and manufacture of all non-recyclable plastics. “We will, in Scotland, continue to match the best possible ambition that there is, and particularly match what Brussels is doing,” Cunningham said.

For now, the Scottish government is waiting to see if they need the UK’s approval to go ahead with the ban – but they do hope “for the UK Government to sign up to the same ambition and vision so that we are all able to move forward as fast as possible on this,” Cunningham explained.

Banning all disposable plastics is an incredible step and we certainly hope that more countries follow this lead. Even if you don’t live in Scotland, you can take action to reduce plastic pollution by reducing your own use of disposables. To find out how you can make a difference and help the planet by making conscious decisions about your plastic use, check out One Green Planet’s #CrushPlastic campaign!
