Rhinos have had a really tough time as of late. The Western Black Rhino has been declared extinct and rhino poaching is on the rise leaving many rhinos mutilated and dead. However, there is some good news for rhinos as well, like the $23.7 million dollars Warren Buffet’s son has donated to combat rhino poaching.
The other great news is that rhinos have people that care about them as well. For example, take these wildlife vets from South Africa who have nursed a baby white rhino from certain death to health. The white rhino calf was shot in the head by poachers and survived but unfortunately her mother did not.
Luckily, the calf was able to survive thanks to the medical care given by the wildlife vets. She also developed a special bond with the vets as they took over many of the motherly duties for her. It’s amazing that she is able to trust people after losing her mother and almost losing her own life to the ugly side of humanity.
One aspect of her recovery is absolutely adorable. Rhinos are active animals that need lots of exercise and can even run up to 25 miles per hour in adulthood. So, the wildlife vets decided to take the calf out for runs to get her exercise; they run ahead and she chases. It’s the cutest thing you’ll see all day long!
