This is a public service announcement to all animal guardians around the world: DON’T PUT YOUR PET IN THE MAIL. This may seem like a crazy thing to have to tell people – and we agree. But four weeks ago, D’artagnan the dog arrived in a metal cage at the doorstep of a Let’s Adopt rescue center. His family had decided to abandon him and, instead of driving, they shipped the unfortunate dog – by snail mail – to their local shelter. Their stupidity would be unimaginable, except it actually happened.

When he arrived, D’artagnan was skittish, upset, and starving – which is exactly how we’d feel if we had been shipped in a metal cage across the country. However, after plenty of treats and some belly rubs, he was a new dog. When he was completely recovered, Viktor Larkhill, the founder of Let’s Adopt, took D’artagnan out to the woods just outside of Årjäng, Värmland, Sweden to play with his new brothers and sisters.

While this story may be absurd, we should learn from it. Becoming the guardian of any animal is an incredible responsibility and it’s a lifelong commitment. Many people don’t realize and end up mistreating or abandoning their four-legged friends. So when you go to adopt an animal, think of it like a child, a be ready for the fun and exhaustion that comes with parenthood. To support Let’s Adopt, you can donate here.
