Imagining a world without elephants seems pretty ridiculous, right? These animals are iconic and represent the graceful elegance and sheer power of nature. Yet, the sad reality is that we are inches away from a future where wild elephants are nothing but a distant memory.

One African elephant loses their life every 15 minutes thanks to the illegal ivory trade, and if we don’t act quickly to protect these populations, scientists predict they will be extinct from the wild in the next twenty years. This is a heartbreaking fact to level with, but thankfully, there are many people fighting relentlessly to ensure this does not happen.

David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s (DSWT) Orphan Project in Kenya, featured in the video above, is filled with these people. This amazing team helps rescue the orphans of the ivory trade and provide them with all the care and comfort they need to thrive in the world. Losing a parent is just as traumatic for baby elephants as it is for humans and these little ones need around the clock care when they first arrive in their sanctuary home. The dedication and love given to these animals is absolutely unmatched, and around 190 elephant calves have been successfully raised and released back to the wild because of DSWT’s care.

We all need to stand up for elephants if we hope to save this awe-inspiring species. You can help by firstly NEVER purchasing any item made with ivory – even if it is “antique” as illegally poached ivory is easily counterfeited and passed off as old. Share this video and encourage others to learn about the threats facing elephants. And lastly, support the lifesaving work of DSWT. To learn more about this organization, click here.
