The very first days of life for little Neptune the elephant are magical enough to bring a smile to everyone’s face. This baby elephant was born on March 3, 2017, to Ndara, an ex-orphan elephant from the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) Nairobi Nursery. Shortly after giving birth, Ndara brought her new baby to see her former caretakers! The pair made a huge impression, the baby still wobbly on his little legs and following his mother like a shadow!
Ndara’s past was not at all as pretty a picture as her life now, happy and safe with her newborn baby. She was rescued almost sixteen years ago after falling into a manhole. With the help of the DSWT rescue team, she was able to recover and eventually return to the wild. Neptune is the 24th known baby born to ex-orphans who are now living in the wild.
Organizations like the DSWT make life for ex-orphans possible, and Ndara and Neptune are a testament to the program’s success.
