DW reports that video games are adopting climate change as a theme. New games and game producers are hoping to appeal to environmentalists.

One such game, Beyond Blue, sets a protagonist in the ocean. The game uses footage from BBC’s Blue Planet II to inspire gamers and create a real world. Alan Gershenfeld, a co-founder of E-Line Media told DW, “The more gamers care about the ocean, the more they want to explore the ocean, avocational or as a career. I believe, that’s a key step towards ocean preservation.”

The UN is also a proponent of using video games as a climate change awareness tool. The global agency released a report “PLAYING FOR THE PLANET: HOW VIDEO GAMES CAN DELIVER FOR PEOPLE AND THE ENVIRONMENT.” Video games are the fastest-growing media platform in the world.

“Given that the environment is itself wickedly complex, I think game-worlds have a huge potential for showing how change can ripple through systems; perhaps the first time in my life I truly grappled with the problem of industrial pollution was when I played the original SimCity and Civilization!,” said Tom Chatfield, Author, Fun INC in the UN report.

The Playing for the Planet Alliance is a new initiative that encourages climate action within the gaming industry.

“The games industry is now probably the biggest entertainment medium of our time,” shared Sam Barratt, Chief of Youth, Education and Advocacy at UNEP and Alliance Co-Founder, and notes that one in three people on the planet play video games. “Their reach and engagement powers are unprecedented. If supported in the right way, the sector can be a major partner in shifting the environmental debate.”
