A rare case of monkeypox was confirmed in Maryland this Tuesday after a traveler returned from taking a visit to Nigeria.

The Maryland patient has been hospitalized in isolation, and authorities are looking to contact anyone they might have been in contact with. It is believed to be contagious to other humans through respiratory droplets. Those on the plane were required to wear masks so authorities hope that that was enough to protect the other passengers.

Monkeypox is a rare and potentially dangerous viral illness that imitates the symptoms of the flu. It also causes swelling of the lymph nodes, which progresses to a widespread rash on the face and body

The virus originates from a strain that has been re-emerging in Nigeria since 2017. It can be contagious, which is why travelers are encouraged to be on the lookout for any symptoms associated with it. People can often catch this viral illness by coming into contact with an infected animal or animal products.

There have been 8 confirmed cases in US travelers that visited Nigeria, with a recent case taking place in Texas in 2021.
