The world of fashion is evolving with more and more designers and manufacturers opting for cruelty-free, eco-friendly alternatives to leather. Companies have gotten creative, creating leather-like materials from natural fibers like pineapple, coconut, and even leftover wine products. There is one brand that is really upping the ante in the faux leather game through the complex biofabrication of collagen – Modern Meadow.

Modern Meadow began with two goals in mind – to help stop the brutality associated with the leather industry and to reduce the ecological effects caused by the tanning process of traditional leathers. The company explains their process as such: “Biofabrication enables us to grow nature’s materials using living cells instead of animals. We grow collagen, a protein you find in animal skin, from which we create a biofabricated leather material.” The result is a material that can be shaped into any form with varying textures and colors while maintaining the durability associated with traditional leather.

This may seem like something from the future, but the future is now, and Modern Meadow is set to debut its first biofabricated leather shirt this October 1, 2017 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

This is amazing news and is a monumental start to ending the cruelty associated with leather and the fashion industry.

Please share this with your friends and family to help spread awareness of this awesome new brand!
