When you think of mixed martial arts (MMA), you probably think of healthy individuals at the top of their game competing in tournaments that test their stamina and skill. What you don’t normally picture is an MMA fighter who trains for his events by throwing cats. Care2 is raising a petition calling for Albert “Machete” Duraev to be prevented from competing as a result.
Duraev, the world’s 59th best Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) middleweight, should be making a name for himself with the series of successful fights he has won against his opponents over the last few years. But instead, the name Duraev is becoming synonymous with animal cruelty. In footage recorded on a phone, Duraev and a friend, who is also thought to be an MMA fighter, are seen tossing his pet cat back and forth eleven times. As the tossing continues, the cat becomes more visibly distressed, and at one point was thrown with enough force to somersault through the air.
Incredibly, Duraev seems proud of his actions, posting the footage on his Instagram account with the caption: “An ordinary day in Avtury. It is toy cat.” One of the men can be heard in the video saying, “He’s like a rocket!” Viewers on social media have been quick to criticize.
Eventually, Duraev, who is originally from Chechen but lives and competes in Volgograd, Russia, put the cat back down on the ground, where the animal appeared too traumatized to move. We wonder what possible justification Duraev could have for being so unthinking and careless about his own pet.
Cats are beautiful animals that come into our homes and lives demanding only affection and company (and food, of course). We would rather be a planet full of crazy cat people than be associated with any form of cruelty toward them.
Please join us in signing the Care2 petition calling for Duraev to never be allowed to compete in MMA fighting again.
