As a reckless publicity stunt, The Mokai Lounge in South Beach, Florida, recently allowed a woman to RIDE A HORSE onto the dancefloor. What!? As you can imagine, the horse was terrified by the loud noises and busy bar. The horse knocked the woman off and some of the club goers began screaming at the horse. Video of the incident went viral, with thousands of people demanding action against the nightclub.
Jimmy L. Morales, the Miami Beach City Manager, heard the complaints loud and clear and REVOKED the nightclub’s business license. “I was disgusted and offended that any legitimate businessperson would think this was an appropriate action to take. This activity was not permitted, and as soon as we became aware, I immediately instructed staff to act swiftly in remedying this situation,” said Morales.
In addition to the nightclub’s business license being revoked, police and law enforcement officers have launched an investigation. Thankfully, no injuries to humans or the horse have been reported, but such a dangerous stunt should never have been attempted.
Many have noticed the similarities between The Mokai Lounge stunt and an incident at Studio 54 in New York City where Bianca Jagger rode a white horse into the party. Rightly so, that doesn’t justify the incident. “This is 2018, not Studio 54, and we know that horses are skittish animals who don’t belong among the pounding music, shouting crowds, and flashing lights of a nightclub,” People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) said in a statement.
While we are glad some steps have been taken, you can help further keep the pressure on so that another tactless event such as this one never happens again. The marketing director who coordinated bringing the terrified horse onto the dancefloor STILL has his job! Join other animal lovers in calling for the firing of the marketing director by signing this important Care2 petition. We must ALWAYS speak up when we see animal cruelty!
