A sweet little chihuahua, nicknamed “Freeway,” is shaking and shivering but safe after the California Highway Patrol (CHP) rescued her from the top of a concrete barrier dividing traffic on the busy Interstate-680 in Walnut Creek, Calif.
Officials don’t know how the tiny dog got there, but it clearly wasn’t her decision. Even if she happened to wander onto the Interstate without getting hit, she could not have jumped onto the high barrier by herself. Someone abandoned her there as a sick prank, and sadly got away with it. It would have been easier and safer to dump her anywhere else, preferably at an animal shelter, but the prankster obviously had no interest in the dog’s safety and future.
No one reported witnessing the abandonment, but a concerned driver later reported seeing the stranded pup, and CHP officers rushed to the rescue. Lucky little Freeway will be held at the Contra Costa County Animal Shelter for two days before a lucky pet parent can take her home.
