They say that after period of time, dogs start to take on traits and habits that resemble their guardians. If you are super active and love healthy eating, chances are your dog joins you on walks or runs and is always happy to split a carrot treat afterward. But, if you’re letting your healthy habits slip … you might want to make sure that the same isn’t happening for your beloved pet. Getting proper exercise and maintaining a healthy weight is just as important for dogs as it is for humans.
This is certainly a lesson that the former guardian of “Kale Chips” the beagle could have used early on.
Poor little Kale Chips is a severely obese beagle who was surrendered to Chicago Animal Control. Kale Chips weighs 85 pounds and can hardly walk, let alone support his own weight. He has been taken in by a local animal rescue, One Tail at a Time, who is on a mission to get this not-so-little pup trim and fit which will hopefully lead to a new forever home.
Rescuers had to use a wheel barrow to transport Kale Chips from the shelter to his new home at the rescue. It is certainly going to be a long road to recovery, but One Tail at a Time explains on Facebook that they have helped slim down other dogs this size before.
It is the assumption of rescuer, Heather Owen, that his previous guardian was unable to walk this beagle, which lead to his extreme size. But just to be sure, Kale Chips is also undergoing a series of tests to check for any related health issues that could have caused this.
If you’re wondering how such a husky pup got a name like Kale Chips … it was given to him by rescuers because, “that’s pretty much what his future looks like.” Being kale connoisseurs ourselves, we have to say that future doesn’t sound too rough at all!
Good luck Kale Chips!
