Real-life “Lady and the Tramp,” Mavis and Martin, spent their days together, walking along speedline tracks and living on trash in a dangerous Philadelphia salvage yard. The female, Mavis, had birthed two litters, and junkyard workers would take the pups to sell, while ignoring the parents’ needs. A local resident named Alana observed the pair and thought they deserved better.

Unable to catch Mavis and Martin herself, Alana called pet detective Steve Hagey for help. The plight of the two dogs frightened him, particularly their wanderings along and across the train tracks. It was a wonder they were still alive after three years living at the junkyard.

Hagey noticed the clear romantic bond between the two dogs. He initially attempted to catch them with humane baited traps, but Martin would steal the food undetected, bring it to his mate, and guard her chivalrously while she ate.

Eventually, Hagey figured out a way to catch them together, which you can see for yourself in the rescue video below!

Now, the couple is safe and sound with PAWS New England. Mavis is very shy and uncomfortable when away from Martin, so the shelter hopes to find a single home for both of them. You can apply to adopt or foster Mavis and Martin, or send a donation at PAWS’ website.
