You’ve heard about the McGriddle, but what about the McClimate Change? Sounds like something you’d order off the dollar menu? Mmm, maybe not. This is exactly the message “Frostpaw” the polar bear from the Center of Biological Diversity is trying to get across.
McDonald’s recently announced its plan to serve “sustainable beef” (quite the oxymoron in my opinion) but Frostpaw sees that offer and wants to personally raise Ronald a 100 percent plant-based meal option. Sound familiar? Earlier this year One Green Planet covered a story on wellness author, Kathy Freston’s petition to get a meat-less option on McDonald’s menu. Kathy’s petition is still open on Change.org, so I encourage you to sign it with Frostpaw in mind.
While in an ideal world, fast-food chains like McDonald’s – that perpetuate factory-farming and environmental degradation with every fatty fry – would be replaced by small, local “slow-food” restaurants, the more practical solution is to encourage small changes first.
The 100 plant-based options in McDonald’s would provide thousands of people living in food deserts with a healthy alternative at an affordable price. I won’t go into the incredible injustice surrounding the American food system, but in our current reality McDonald’s is a major food provider for many residents of the U.S. If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em…and subsequently make them better!
By adding a meat-free option to their menu McDonald’s has the incredible opportunity to help improve the health of millions of Americans, while also helping to mitigate the environmental damage that their meat production causes.
In an open letter to McDonald’s. Frostpaw’s appeals to the plight of the polar bear – one of the many victims of McDonald’s meat-heavy menu, describing McDonald’s carbon footprint as “clown-shoe-sized.” But the clown-digs aside, Frostpaw highlights the enormous potential McDonald’s has to be a leader in this growing food revolution.
McDonald’s made its name by being revolutionary. They have one food revolution under their belt, now its time for McDonald’s to adapt with the times and be the positive symbol they claim to be. Help us see this revolution come to life by sharing Frostpaw’s letter and signing Kathy Freston’s petition. McDonald’s has great power to change the entire food industry, now we just need to change them!
