Dr. Anthony Fauci spoke about the potential coronavirus vaccines and how herd immunity would work with the vaccine. Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said a vaccine is only as effective as the number of people in a community that get it and the vaccine itself must be effective to work. Without an effective vaccine and enough people getting the vaccine, it would be hard to stop the coronavirus outbreak.

Three coronavirus vaccines should undergo clinical trials in the new few months, but Fauci is worried about making sure the drug is effective enough, “The best we’ve ever done is measles, which is 97 to 98 percent effective,” said Fauci. “That would be wonderful if we get there. I don’t think we will. I would settle for [a] 70, 75% effective vaccine.”

A CNN poll found that a third of Americans would not get the coronavirus vaccine when it was available, even for a low cost. CNN said that with only two-thirds of the population getting vaccinated and a 75% effective vaccine is not enough to create herd immunity. Herd immunity is when enough of a population has either had a virus or had a vaccine so that person-to-person transmission is limited.

Fauci noted it will be difficult to educate people about vaccines, because “there is a general anti-science, anti-authority, anti-vaccine feeling among some people in this country — an alarmingly large percentage of people, relatively speaking.” To get people educated and knowledgable about vaccines, Fauci recommended that celebrities and relatable community figures must provide reason and rationale for the vaccine. There’s no indication that such a program is underway in the government at this time.
