We love when celebrities promote a plant-based lifestyle, and Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo is doing just that. In an interview with People magazine, Pompeo credits Dr. Kristi Funk for influencing her to make the switch during a routine check-up. After learning of the health benefits of going plant-based, including the prevention of breast cancer, according to Dr. Funk and other studies, Pompeo was convinced to switch not only her own diet but her family’s as well.
When asked if the transition has been difficult for herself, her husband, and three children, ages eight, three, and one, Pompeo replied, “It’s super fun … I don’t think it’s tricky at all — it’s actually easier because meat you have to cook it before it goes bad. Grains and lentils and rice and beans, everything’s in the pantry already. You just have to get vegetables, but vegetables stay good for a week — and I think we all feel better.”
Pompeo was also wise to note how going plant-based helps the planet as well as personal health. “I think we’re at a critical point for our planet and in the United States, this health issue is out of control, the obesity, the diabetes everything … Sickness is a huge business, I know that really, really well. The message of veganism is not one that they want to get out but not only will it help us, it helps the planet.”
It is great to see a celebrity demonstrate how easy it is to transition to a plant-based lifestyle without making sacrifices, even with children. Considering industrialized animal agriculture is at the center of our current environmental crisis, we need all the help we can get to encourage people to leave meat off the menu.
