“Blackfish” made quite a splash when it was released back in January. The film examines the history of killer whale captivity leading up to the 2010 killing of SeaWorld trainer Dawn Branchaeu by Tilikum.
Naturally, SeaWorld was upset by its release and in a statement said that “instead of a fair and balanced treatment of a complex subject, the film is inaccurate and misleading.”
While the tragedy of Branchaeu’s death should not be overlooked, we can’t help but point out that SeaWorld is itself not a “fair” and “balanced” enterprise. The company may provide rehabilitation and rescue services but it contradicts its efforts by continuing to hold a number of marine animals in captivity and forcing them to perform tricks.
To shed light on the captivity industry, CNN is hosting the television premiere of “Blackfish” this Thursday, Oct. 24 at 9 p.m. ET. Spread the word by joining in and sharing the Facebook event and tweeting the news with the hashtag #SeeBlackfishCNN.
