A Utah man who was duck hunting with his friend and dog was shot in his buttocks after his dog stepped on a shotgun laid across the bow of his boat.
The Box Elder County Sheriff’s Deputy Kevin Potter said the man left his 12-gauge shotgun in the boat to set decoys and the dog stepped on it, causing it to unload 27 pellets into his owner’s butt.
“The dog got excited, was jumping around inside the boat and then it jumped on the gun. It went off, shooting the [decoy setter] in the buttocks,” Potter said. “(The dog) did something to make the gun discharge, I don’t know if the safety device was on. It’s not impossible the dog could have taken it off safety.”
The wounded hunter was transported to a nearby hospital, where doctors removed the 27 pellets of birdshot from his butt and released the man to nurse his wounds — and pride.
All ducks in the area were reported safe (for the moment).
