For the 70 million stray animals living in the United States, life on the streets is agonizing. You have to somehow get by with whatever scraps of food you can find, get a suitable shelter from the elements and on top of all that, injuries and illness run rampant. For Luther, a Boxer mix, this was the life he was sadly accustomed to. This sweet boy was found wandering around the freezing streets of a Detroit neighborhood.
Residents who were feeding Luther tried to catch him, but he was understandably scared and would avoid their attempts.
Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue, an emergency rescue service in Michigan, was called and the team quickly set up a live trap for Luther. Thank goodness because temperatures in Detroit this time of the year can easily get down to below freezing!
And what does Luther have to say about being rescued? Well, we think his face says it all. Look at that ear-to-ear grin!
Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue recently shared on Facebook that Luther tested positive for heartworm. The rescue will ensure he receives the care he needs and believes he will make a full recovery but heartworm treatment isn’t cheap. If you’d like to donate towards Luther’s medical care, you can do so here.
Once Luther is heartworm free, we are confident this happy boy will bring so much joy to his forever home! Please always spay and neuter your pets and urge your friends and family to do the same. Fostering an animal is also a great way to help end the pet homelessness crisis. Regardless if you open up your home to a rescued dog, cat, bird, pig, or any pet, you can feel wonderful knowing you have saved a life and cared for an animal who will soon find his or her forever home.
