Early one morning, Sissy the Schnauzer disappeared from her home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She had never run away before and her guardian was shocked and terrified when he discovered she had slipped out.

It turns out, however, that Sissy didn’t “run away,” but rather ran to find someone. And that someone was her mom, Nancy Franck.

Nancy had been hospitalized two weeks earlier after undergoing surgery for ovarian cancer and was recovering at Mercy Cedar Rapids Hospital. Clearly, Sissy missed her mother and was tired of waiting for her to come home, so she set off to find her missing caretaker. In no time at all, Sissy was able to sniff out her mom and followed the scent all the way to the hospital.

When Nancy woke up this past Saturday morning, she was surprised to see her daughter there with Sissy in hand. “I said ‘did you sneak this dog in here?’ She [Nancy’s daughter] said, ”no, she sneaked herself in here, mom’,” Nancy told reporters.

Sissy had snuck out of her house and traveled twenty blocks to the hospital, which she had never been to before. She was found running across the lobby by hospital security. Security footage shows Sissy walking right through the front doors of the hospital and running around. We imagine that if Sissy could have used the elevator, she would have made it to her mom all on her own.

When the dog was caught, a guard used her tags to contact Nancy’s husband. Sissy’s dad explained to the guard that she had been acting strange for a few days and seemed anxious to go somewhere. Obviously, that somewhere was wherever her mom was!

Sissy had only been missing about four hours when the hospital called. Although it remains a mystery how this little dog found her way to the hospital, Nancy was overjoyed to see her faithful companion. We have to hand it to Sissy for being so brave and taking matters into her own paws. She accomplished her goal of seeing her adoring mom and was also able to provide the love and support necessary to make Nancy smile.

“It helped a lot,” Nancy said, “just to see her and talk to her.” What a pup!
