Rescue Dogs Rock NYC has a horrific story to share with you about a dog named Cherry, also known as Lucky, who has seen very little luck in her life at all. Please be careful when viewing the link to her story, because the images are very graphic.

Cherry was taken into a Texas kill shelter with a severe leg injury. Her back right leg has been completely degloved and is infected and necrotic from sitting in that condition for a number of days. Cherry was picked up as a stray by animal control, and because of the condition her leg was in, she was going to be euthanized. The shelter involved called Rescue Dogs Rock for their help, hoping to save Cherry’s life.

Rescue Dogs Rock arranged for Cherry to be taken to their Texas vet partner, who inspected this gruesome injury and realized that Cherry was a chained dog who probably lived outside 24/7. It seems that Cherry got tangled in her chain and had to chew herself free. What makes this even harder to stomach is knowing the owner left Cherry in this condition for over a week. Can you imagine poor Cherry literally chewing away at her own leg for her freedom, and the agony and constant discomfort she would have been in? It doesn’t bear thinking about, but this appalling excuse of an owner left her to suffer and is now upset that Cherry won’t be returned to her to continue this abuse.

Cherry’s leg cannot be saved, and she is in the process of having it amputated. One moment of care shown by this owner could have saved that leg. We can only hope that the infection of this wound hasn’t seeped into Cherry’s body to cause sepsis. This is going to be a waiting game to see if Cherry will make a recovery or not.

Pets are not objects you can chain up outside your home and neglect, a pet is a part of your family. If a person has no time or sense of how to care for an animal – like Cherry’s pathetic excuse for an owner – then they have no right to have a pet. We hope that in the future, this cruel person will be prosecuted for this awful neglect. If you suspect an animal is being abused or neglected, please do not ignore it.

Rescue Dogs Rock works hard to save abused and at-risk dogs from kill shelters and provides them with vetting and loving homes. They are asking for donations toward the medical treatment Cherry so desperately needs. If you are in a position to help, please get in touch.
