An undercover investigation conducted by PETA found an illegal breeding operation in Michigan filled with neglected and abused animals. 39 dogs were seized by authorities, including Ruthie, the Jack Russel terrier.

Ruthie was neglected, repeatedly bred, and had litters taken away from her by her cruel backyard breeder. PETA has since released a video of Ruthie in her new home, where she looks unrecognizable and finally healthy and happy.
During the investigation, PETA found dogs that were kept outside in muddy pens in all weather conditions.
“PETA’s investigator documented that dozens of dogs were confined to small, barren kennels with little protection from the bitter cold and snow 24/7—conditions so dire that they prompted PETA supporters to hold a four-day sit-in at the Missaukee County Sheriff’s Office until it enforced the law against cruelty to animals,” PETA wrote in a press release.
PETA recently released a video of a clean, healthy, and loved Ruthie in her new home. When Ruthie was first adopted, she did not look at her new humans in their eyes and did not want to be around them. The poor pup was traumatized, and it took her a while to get warmed up to her new family. With help from her two new canine siblings, Ruthie began to learn the ropes of normal dog life.
“They pretty much taught her the ins and outs of everything here,” said Kenny Carney, her new human.
“Ruthie found love, but as long as people buy from breeders rather than adopting from shelters, other wonderful dogs will be caged or penned in puppy mills and deprived of the care and love they need,” says PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch. “PETA reminds everyone that breeders see dogs as breeding machines, there simply to churn out pups for them to sell.”
Puppy Mills are large breeders that mistreat dogs to maximize profits. They keep dogs in cramped, dirty cages, where the dogs are unable to get sufficient exercise and often suffer from untreated injuries and disease outbreaks. These poor animals are often kept in tiny wire and wood cages that hardly allow any room for movement. They are stacked on top of each other or bolted up walls to maximize profit by minimizing the amount of space needed to keep as many dogs as possible. Their cages are unsanitary, often getting caked in excrement. In some cases, animals are kept out year-round in all types of weather. In others, animals are kept in dark basements where they will never get to see the light of day or breathe fresh air.

To reduce the number of suffering dogs on the streets and dogs who are euthanized, it’s important to adopt instead of shop for a dog and never support breeding. Familiarize yourself with tips for adopting so you’re well prepared and read about why breeding dogs is a problem, even if the breeder is “reputable.”
