When you think of a dog, the term “pet” usually comes to mind. However, when you think of a pig, for most people “food” comes to mind. Why is this and how can this mindset be changed? Well, the people at Barn Sanctuary are on a mission to show others that farm animals are no different than your pets and deserve the same respect, love, and care. Just look at this adorable photo of Barn Sanctuary residents, Little Dude the pig and his friend Luna the dog. What is the difference?

Both animals are clearly affectionate, both are equally beautiful, both are intelligent (Did you know pigs are actually more intelligent than dogs … and in some cases three-year-old kids?), and both are highly social animals. Knowing this, why is the suffering of one animal inadmissible while the other is doomed to end up on someone’s plate?

Some people might find it comforting to think of their food as something separate or different than the sentient animal we see above, but the reality is that this is nothing more than a social construct … and something we can readily change ourselves.

Barn Sanctuary is a refuge for farm animals that are victims of abuse, neglect, abandonment, and even natural disasters. They are a hands-on rescue that allows visitors to come and see a different side of these beautiful, vivacious, and intelligent animals. Visitors are allowed to play, cuddle, and interact with the animals while learning about the affects of factory farming – not just on the animals but also the environment and our own health.

Barn Sanctuary works tirelessly to make the world a better place for all, but you can help by educating yourself about the devastating effects of factory farming and sharing what you know with others.

When it comes to feeling fear, pain, love, and joy, a rat is a pig is a dog is a boy.
