Exciting news for all of you Orange is the New Black fans! Danielle Brooks, who plays the outspoken Taystee on the hit Netflix show – a character known for always advocating for equal rights and fair treatment – is now speaking out for yet another cause! Brooks shared with her fans that she has been trying to eat vegan!
The actress posted an Instagram story recently to her 2.2 million followers that showed a pot of pasta with tempeh, with the star stating, “Vegan life! Day nine of the rest of my life??”
Just the next day, Brooks tweeted out to her 358,000 fans that she is on day ten of eating vegan and is “feeling solid.” Go, Danielle!
This month alone, several celebrities have proclaimed they are eating vegan, including singer and songwriter Ne-Yo. Welcome to the plant-based eating family, Danielle!
While we don’t know the exact reason why Brooks made the switch to eating plant-based, whether it’s for health, environmental or animal welfare concerns, we are thrilled she is loving vegan food. A whole foods vegan diet has repeatedly been linked to better heart health, prevention of diabetes and cancer, and more. Leafy greens, all vegetables, 100 percent whole grains, raw nuts and seeds, beans and legumes, and fruit of all kinds turn out to be brilliant weapons against major disease.
Not only that, but there are many other reasons to want to eschew meat and dairy. One major concern is animal welfare, in addition to the use of hormones and antibiotics that inevitably end up in meat and dairy. The environmental toll of industrialized animal agriculture also causes major concern. The destructive animal agriculture industry currently occupies over half of the world’s arable land resources, uses the majority of our freshwater stores, and drives more greenhouse gas emissions than the entire transportation sector combined. Plus, industrialized animal agriculture also causes rampant air and water pollution, land degradation, deforestation and is pushing countless species to the brink of extinction.
Knowing how dire of a situation the planet is in because of our meat habit, it’s great to see celebrities use their platform to speak up for animals, their health, and the environment! And we can’t help but wonder if any of the other ladies of Litchfield will eat vegan too after being inspired by Danielle.
