Thankfully, the pressing issue of plastic pollution is becoming more of a hot topic as of late. Planet Earth’s latest, Blue Planet II, has even inspired the Queen of England to set measures to ban plastic usage! And largely due to a viral video of a sea turtle with a plastic straw embedded in his nostril, straws have become a main target in the fight against plastic pollution, and people, including celebrities, have been inspired to “stop sucking.”
Always a progressive state, California has proposed legislation commonly called the “straws-by-request” law, which would require restaurants to only provide straws to customers upon request. Two California cities, Davis and San Luis Obispo, already have similar legislation in place, and majority leader of the California State Assembly, Ian Calderon, would like to see the rule executed statewide. The proposition was initially met with a backlash since it was categorized under violations that would result in high fines and potential jail time for offenders, but it has since been amended and is ready to be approved.
A petition has been set up for the public to voice their support for the legislation. Please take a moment to sign the petition to help decrease plastic straw usage in California.
Plastic pollution cannot be taken lightly. It is such a major epidemic that it is predicted there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans by 2050. Plastics never disappear, but rather break down into microplastics, which also harm wildlife and our ecosystem. We all must do our part to help put a stop to this pollution crisis.
