The first person has been vaccinated against the coronavirus, kicking off a campaign of vaccinations in England, as the rest of the world will soon follow. Margaret Keenan, 90, a former jewelry shop assistant, was the first to receive the vaccine on December 8.

Rolled out by the National Health Service, the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine was rolled out to Britons, making them the first in the world to get the vaccine. It’s another step to end the pandemic that’s killed over 1.5 million people around the world.

“I feel so privileged to be the first person vaccinated against Covid-19,” said Keenan, who lives in central England. “It means I can finally look forward to spending time with my family and friends in the new year after being on my own for most of the year.”

Because the vaccine must be kept and supplied at cold temperatures, employees are working with precision to keep it cold, timely, and delivered effectively to a large swath of waiting people. Hospitals will be administering the vaccine until it can be delivered directly to care homes and medical offices. The UK has ordered 40 million doses, and 800,000 will be given as part of the first wave.

“Today is a great day for medical science, and the future,” Chris Whitty, the chief medical officer for England, said when the rollout began.
