In Richmond, Virginia, a nearly 40-pound cat named Patches captured the hearts of animal lovers and found a new home in just a matter of hours. Patches was taken to the Richmond Animal Care and Control Center earlier this month, where the staff quickly fell in love with his impressive size and lovable personality.
A spokesperson for the shelter expressed their fondness for Patches’ belly, but for the sake of his health, they placed him on a special diet and exercise plan. Patches was neutered, tested, chipped, and prepared for adoption, but it didn’t take long for someone to snatch him up.
Kay Ford, a local cat owner, saw a photo of Patches and knew she had to adopt him. “I knew that there were going to be nine billion people who were falling in love with him at the same time,” she said. Ford’s proximity to the shelter made it easy for her to claim Patches, who immediately took to her.
While Patches is certainly a large cat, he’s not the biggest one in the world. According to Guinness World Records, the heaviest cat on record was a 10-year-old feline named Himmy, who weighed approximately 46 pounds in 1986.
Patches’ story highlights the importance of adopting animals from shelters and providing them with loving homes. Adopting pets not only gives them a second chance at a happy life but also frees up valuable space and resources at animal shelters for other animals in need.
Pet obesity is a growing concern in the United States, and Patches’ situation serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining a healthy weight for our pets. A balanced diet and regular exercise are crucial for their overall well-being. Consulting with a veterinarian can help pet owners develop appropriate diet and exercise plans tailored to their pets’ individual needs.
